Malaysia’s Beh Lee Wei and Ng Sock Khim captured their first ever Women’s Doubles title on the ITTF Pro Tour, when they beat the host nation’s Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak at the final hurdle in Indore at the Indian Open on Sunday 15th March 2009.
Seeded no.2, they overcame Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak, seeded no.3 by the margin of 11-8, 11-4, 11-9, 11-9.
It was an impressive performance by the Malaysian duo who at no stage were subjected to a deciding seventh game.
In fact the surrendered only one individual game en route to gold, that being in the semi-finals against the Indian pairing of Pooja Sahasrabudhe and Sanya Sehgal.
Tried and Trusted
Both pairings are tried and trusted with Mouma Das and Poulomi Ghatak, statistically the more successful.
They competed as partnerships in the World Championships in 1997, 2001 and 2007; whilst in 2004 they reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Doubles at the Commonwealth Championships.
Furthermore, it was one step better than in 2007 at the Indian Open when they departed at the penultimate stage, their previous best on the ITTF Pour having in 2001 in Brazil and in 2003 in Qatar, reached the quarter-final stage.
Progress Continued
Meanwhile, for Beh Lee Wei and Ng Sock Khim it was a continuation of progress; in 2007 they had reached the round of the last 16 in the World Championships and the semi-finals at the Commonwealth Championships whilst in 2008, they tasted gold.
They won the Women’s Doubles crown at the South East Asian Championships and in Indore secured gold again.
Question
First place for Malaysia and is it a first for Malaysia? Has any player from that country ever won an ITTF Pro Tour
